How to Calculate Fares

Four Fare Zones

PanTran fares are very easy to calculate if you are aware of the four fare zones and the two simple rules for calculating the fare.

The four fare zones are:*

Fare Schedule*

General Public $1.00
Zone 1 $1.50
Zone 2 $2.00
Zone 3 $2.50
Zone 4 $3.00

Half-fare Cards 50% of fares
*Above fares are for each one-way trip.

Passes/tickets available from driver or at transit office. Please have exact change.

Two Rules for Calculating the Fare
[For Any One Continuous Bus Trip]

  1. PanTran’s base boarding fare is $1.00. This is the fare for any bus trip that starts and ends in the same zone with no crossing of a boundary into another zone to reach a destination.
  2. 50 cents is added to the base boarding fare for each time that another zone boundary is crossed, even if the same zone is crossed more than one time.

[See Example 4 below of bus crossing into same zone more than one time to reach a destination.]
    Rates effective May 1, 2004.

Three Fare Calculations (Examples)

  1. Passenger boards at Martinsburg Mall and travels to City Hospital
Both the starting and ending points are in Zone 1 (Martinsburg). No zone boundary crossed. [Base Fare - $1.00] Total Bus Fare -  $1.00 [Effective 6/1/04 - Holders of a PanTran Half-Fare Card receive a 50% Discount]
  2. Passenger boards at Caperton Train Station and travels to VA Medical Center
The starting point is in Zone 1 (Martinsburg). The ending point is in Zone 2 (Berkeley County). A zone boundary is crossed. [Base Fare $1.00 + 50 cents] Total Bus Fare $1.50     [Effective 6/1/04 - Holders of a PanTran Half-Fare Card receive a 50% Discount]
  3. Passenger boards at Harpers Ferry and travels to Martinsburg
The starting point is in Zone 4. Bus crosses into Zone 3 (Jefferson), Zone 2 (Berkeley), and Zone 1 (Martinsburg) to reach destination. Three zone boundaries are crossed. [Base Fare $1.00 + 1.50 (0.50 cents x 3)] Total Bus Fare $2.50 [Effective 6/1/04 - Holders of a PanTran Half-Fare Card receive a 50% Discount]
